From Page to Screen: Anuja Chauhan’s Novels Struggle to Make a Mark in Adaptations

Despite Anuja Chauhan’s novels enjoying widespread acclaim, their transition to film or television adaptations has been less than successful. Could it be that the essence of Chauhan’s Hinglish writing style gets lost in translation to the screen? Or perhaps her light-hearted plots fail to resonate when expanded upon?

Previous adaptations like The Zoya Factor and Dil Bekaraar failed to capture the essence of Chauhan’s work and fizzled out. However, Murder Mubarak, based on her 2021 novel Club You to Death, shows some promise.

Homi Adajania’s film for Netflix, penned by Gazal Dhaliwal and Suprotim Sengupta, stays true to Chauhan’s humorous take on Agatha Christie. Set in the elitist Royal Delhi Club, Murder Mubarak portrays its members as superficial to the point of absurdity.
