Tehran Rejects UN Report on 2022 Protests, Labels it Iranophobia

On March 10, Tehran vehemently denounced a UN report regarding Iran’s handling of mass protests in 2022, accusing Western nations of promoting “Iranophobia.” Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanani criticized the report, stating that it was constructed on “baseless claims” and “false and biased information, without a legal basis.”

International experts, despite Iran’s refusal to participate, conducted an investigation mandated by the UN Human Rights Council following widespread protests triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody. Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, had been arrested for an alleged violation of the country’s strict dress code for women.

The report highlighted the suppression of predominantly peaceful protests that commenced in September 2022, along with “institutionalized discrimination” against women and girls, leading to allegations of “crimes against humanity.” Iran, however, rejected these claims, asserting that the expert committee did not establish the truth and deliberately distorted facts, according to Mr. Kanani.
