Putin Informs Modi of Unavailability for G-20 Summit in Delhi, Sergey Lavrov to Represent Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, conveyed his regret over his inability to participate in the G-20 summit scheduled for September 9 and 10 in Delhi. The Kremlin had previously hinted at this likelihood, citing President Putin’s focus on the ongoing “special military operation” in Ukraine.

As a result of President Putin’s absence, Russia will be represented by its Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Sergey Lavrov, at the G-20 Summit. Prime Minister Modi expressed understanding for Russia’s decision and extended gratitude for the country’s consistent support to initiatives under India’s G20 Presidency.

The announcement came shortly after reports in the Russian media indicated that Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to visit Moscow on September 8 for a meeting with President Putin. There are indications that President Erdogan may proceed to New Delhi for the G-20 summit after the Moscow meeting. Russia and Turkey are engaged in discussions to revive the Black Sea Grain Corridor, adding a layer of geopolitical significance to their interactions.

The absence of President Putin at the G-20 summit underscores the geopolitical complexities arising from the situation in Ukraine, and the diplomatic channels between Russia, India, and other G-20 nations will continue to navigate these challenges in the coming weeks.
