In a significant move towards bolstering technological self-reliance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday, March 1, 2024, that India is poised to emerge as a global hub in semiconductor manufacturing. The declaration comes on the heels of the Union Cabinet’s approval on February 29 for the establishment of three semiconductor units under the ‘Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in India.’
“With the Cabinet approval of 3 semiconductor units under the India Semiconductor Mission, we are further strengthening our transformative journey towards technological self-reliance. This will also ensure India emerges as a global hub in semiconductor manufacturing,” PM Modi affirmed in a post.
The three approved semiconductor units are slated to be set up in strategic locations, namely Dholera in Gujarat, Morigaon in Assam, and Sanand in Gujarat. This initiative is part of the broader vision outlined in the India Semiconductor Mission, aiming to elevate the country’s status in the semiconductor and display manufacturing domain.
The move is expected to not only boost India’s technological prowess but also position the nation as a key player in the global semiconductor market. It aligns with the government’s commitment to fostering indigenous manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign imports, particularly in critical sectors like semiconductor technology.
As India forges ahead on its journey to become a semiconductor manufacturing hub, the decision holds immense promise for the nation’s technological future and underscores its commitment to self-sufficiency in critical industries.
