As the wheat harvest and procurement season looms in March, the Centre has expressed optimism about resolving the ongoing farmers’ protests before the crucial period. Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra conveyed the government’s willingness to engage in further discussions with farmers to address their demands. Given that more than 50% of wheat procurement by the Food Corporation of India occurs in Punjab and Haryana, the resolution holds significance for the upcoming agricultural activities.
Mr. Chopra assured that the Centre is committed to addressing the concerns raised by farmers, citing issues such as the lowering of the water table and soil quality. He noted that the government had presented an offer to the farmer leaders, which, unfortunately, was rejected. Emphasizing the government’s openness to dialogue, Mr. Chopra stated, “As told by the Agriculture Minister, we are willing for further talks. We are happy to talk to them. Probably, we were not able to communicate the full intent. I think constant communication will help resolve the communication gap.”
The statement reflects an ongoing effort by the Centre to engage with farmers and find an amicable solution before the crucial wheat harvest and procurement season kicks in, highlighting the importance of effective communication in bridging gaps and fostering understanding.
