Amidst the prolonged stand-off between the Centre and farmers, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) declared on Thursday its plan to mobilize farmer protest nationwide through a series of programs in support of their demands. The SKM, the central coalition of farmers that spearheaded the impactful 2020-21 farmers’ agitation, is gearing up for an extensive mobilization effort.
This announcement follows a crucial SKM meeting held a day after the unfortunate demise of 21-year-old Shubhkaran Singh at the Khanauri border point of Punjab and Haryana. The incident occurred as protesting farmers sought to resume their march from Punjab to Delhi, highlighting the escalating tensions and risks involved in the ongoing protests.
Since February 13, farmers have been camping in Punjab after authorities halted their entry into Haryana. The ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, orchestrated by the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), both umbrella bodies representing around 200 farmers’ and farm laborer unions, aims to press for the fulfillment of various demands. These demands include a legal guarantee for the purchase of crops at a Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the waiver of farm loans.
As the farmers’ agitation continues to be a focal point of national attention, the SKM’s decision to mobilize on a broader scale reflects a collective determination to address the grievances of the farming community and secure their rights.
